Tupac Biopic Finds New Director

The producers behind the Tupac biopic are moving quickly, with news coming out late last night that a new director has been found. According to The Hollywood Reporter, music video director Benny Boom has signed on to direct the oft-delayed Tupac film, becoming the fourth director attached after Carl Franklin, John Singleton and Antoine Fuqua all departed the project. Singleton even posted on Instagram, saying that “The people involved aren't really respectful of the legacy of Tupac.”

Benny Boom had previously directed the 2009 feature film Next Day Air. The Tupac biopic has reason to expedite production as a previous lawsuit with Tupac's mother Afeni Shakur granted them rights to Tupac's music so long as production began by years end. In addition, the film was plagued by another lawsuit, with one production company suing the other over breach of contract stemming from increased budgeting and autonomous casting decisions.

With numerous obstacles and Singleton's comments, it would be unfortunate for the film to proceed with haste, but it seems this is the reality of the situation. With the window closing for production to begin, it's likely the film will receive further updates as the month progresses.
