The first signs of awards season are nominee announcements, and there's cause to celebrate in the Straight Outta Compton camp. While the film was not nominated for any Golden Globe Awards this morning, it was recognized by the Screen Actors Guild in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, what amounts to the SAG version of best picture. Seeing as it is the actor's guild, solely acting is recognized, and thus the categories are redefined. Compton faces off against the Idris Elba-led Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short starring Christian Bale, Spotlight with Mark Ruffalo, and the Bryan Cranston-anchored Trumbo for the honor.

The critical recognition accompanies what has already been a landmark run for Straight Outta Compton. In just four months (release date was Aug. 14), the film has earned the titles of highest grossing biopic and highest grossing movie by a black director by raking in over $161 million domestically. The film was directed by F. Gary Gary and stars O'Shea Jackson as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Easy-E, Neil Brown Jr. as DJ Yella, Aldis Hodge as MC REN and Paul Giamatti as group manager Jerry Heller. The Straight Outta Compton soundtrack is set to be released in January, around the time of the SAG Awards, which air on Jan. 30, 2016.
