Rapper King Louie was shot in the head in Chicago today (Dec. 23).

Sam Charles of the Chicago Sun-Times confirmed the incident in a tweet after speaking with the rapper's manager. "He's awake and talking," tweeted Charles, a reporter for the newspaper.

According to the Sun-Times, the 27-year-old, also known as King L, was shot in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago. He was reportedly taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The Chicago Tribune reports he was in a vehicle when someone came up to him and shot him.

The shooting comes just four days before the Drilluminati creator's 28th birthday (Dec. 27). Footage of the scene has appeared on an Instagram account, in which a man can be heard saying, "They shot up King Louie's house. RIP King Louie" and giving the address -- "83rd" and "Pulaski" -- where the hit on L occurred. Audio of a police scanner has also appeared online, which reveals King Louie was shot in the "left side of the head."

Hours before he was shot, the Epic Records artist posted an Instagram photo of himself and his three children standing in front of a Christmas tree. "As long as I'm living these 3 🐛'$ $traight #MyKids #👁AmMyBrotgersKeeper," he wrote.

XXL reached out to a rep for the rapper to get an update on his condition. "King Louie is doing fine. The bullet grazed his head and he is able to talk," his publicist confirms.

The rhymer, born Louis Johnson Jr., has kept busy in 2015, releasing the Drilluminati 3: God of Drill and 6 God Tony mixtapes. King Louie, whose a Grammy-nominated artist for his work on Kanye West's song "New Slaves," spoke to XXL in February about his new music and the stigma surrounding his hometown of Chicago.

"We’re known for success and more success than negativity," he said. "The media try to tell you about all the negative stuff that's going on in the city but there's a lot of great and successful things going on. A lot of the younger youth in Chicago being successful in the music and in any art. So I feel good as a native of Chicago. My city influenced the country."

Prayers up for King L.
