Despite a deemphasis on hip-hop, last night's Soul Train Awards still handed out statues to a few of rap and R&B's finest. The Erykah Badu-hosted event saw Jidenna walk away with the best new artist honor while The Weeknd won best R&B/Soul male artist of the year as well as album of the year for Beauty Behind the Madness. Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" won for rap song of the year.

Badu herself made headlines for a monologue that suggested Iggy Azalea isn't a rapper and a performance of "Tyrone" that featured the song's namesake himself. Badu's classic inspired her recent mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone with the song's final lyric working as source material.

Tyrone joined Badu on stage after the singer confiscated audience member's phones during "Phone Down." “Hey everybody I’m Tyrone. I ain’t got time for this. You need to keep my name out your mouth,” he said. “I’ve been driving to folks house and taking to their momma’s house for the past eighteen years. Please.” "Tyrone" originally dropped in 1997 as part of Badu's concert album Live.
