There's beef surrounding the 2Pac biopic, as one production company attached to the project has filed a lawsuit against another. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emmett Furla Oasis is seeking $10 million in damages from Morgan Creek Productions for allegedly exceeding the agreed upon production budget and casting the lead without proper consultation.

According to the lawsuit filed by Emmett/Furla, film production had stalled before they became attached in 2013. The agreement signed with Morgan Creek stated that the production budget was not to exceed $30 million, there would be mutual agreement on the production schedule and sole approval for Emmett/Furla of the director and lead of the film. Carl Franklin had recently replaced John Singleton in the former.

Issues really started to flare up between the two production companies though after the success of this summer's Straight Outta Compton, which depicts Tupac Shakur, albeit briefly and in reference to the West Coast group N.W.A Emmett/Furla allege that shortly after the release of Compton, Morgan Creek required they prove they were able to pay their half of the film's budget, which, a month later, Morgan Creek projected would exceed $34 Million. Emmett/Furla, citing a violation of the initial agreement, refused.

"Their responsibility was to come in with half the budget," Morgan Creek Executive Vice President of marketing and publicity Greg Mielcarz told THR. "That didn't happen. End of story."

Mielcarz also denied that a lead actor had been cast and said that, "It's sad that they are resorting to these kinds of tactics,"

In addition to Straight Outta Compton, Shakur was also depicted in the 2009 Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious. The commercial and critical success of Compton has invigorated the idea of the rap biopic, with a sequel centered around Snoop Dogg, the Dogg Pound and other West Coast rappers of that time, rumored to be in the works. Given Shakur's impact on the culture and larger than life personality, he is an easy subject to profile in similar fashion.
