Lil Wayne Mistakenly Tweets “RIP” to Lamar Odom

Some time yesterday afternoon (Oct. 13), Lamar Odom was discovered unconscious in his room at a brothel northwest of Las Vegas. According to CNN, Love Ranch owner Dennis Hof claims that first responders said that the outlook was grim. Still, at press time, Lamar was reportedly alive and in a Nevada hospital. But as is sometimes the case with breaking situations, information gets lost in translation: Earlier today, Lil Wayne tweeted what seems to be a rest-in-peace message to the former NBA star. When he was apparently informed that Odom is still alive (albeit barely, according to some reports), Wayne went an unusual route for his retraction: instead of deleting the original message, he followed up with, simply, "Woop."

A Queens native, Odom was recruited aggressively out of high school. Too aggressively, some might say:  After he initially committed to UNLV, it was revealed that Odom had received illegal payments from booster, and had possibly benefitted from a less-than-legitimate ACT score. He then transferred to the University of Rhode Island, the school from which he would eventually be drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers. After putting up impressive numbers in his first four seasons, he left for Miami as a restricted free agent. After just one year, Odom would return to Los Angeles to play for the Lakers, with whom he would win the 2008-09 and 2009-10 NBA championships.

However, he hasn't played in the NBA since 2013, the same year he was divorced by Khloe Kardashian, the reality star he married in 2009. (Though the Internet is abuzz with rumors that Khloe and the rest of the family showed up to the hospital with cameras from their E! show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, TMZ reports that to the contrary, the family has banned filming or photography of any kind.) Odom has been dogged by rumors of drug abuse since the tail end of his playing days, and early reports have claimed that toxicology screens revealed cocaine and several opiates.

Odom won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award in 2011, and won a bronze medal wiht the American team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. According to CBS, Lakers star Kobe Bryant left the team's preseason game in Las Vegas yesterday to visit Odom in the hospital. He was reportedly joined by Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak.
