While performing at a show in Ithaca, New York, Talib Kweli had a shoe thrown at him by a woman who was unhappy with Kweli's mid-set "Black Lives Matter" speech. According to Ithaca Voice, Kweli followed up his performance of his song "Knowledge of Self" by tying the current Black Lives Matter movement to the track. After saying the following remark, "What we do is 'black lives only matter' because we're not about that bullshit. We do not say that we hate anybody. We do not say death to police or any of this right-wing conservative bullshit," a woman proceeded to throw a show at the BK MC which led to Kweli calling her "Miley Cyrus" and having the crowd chant "Get the fuck out, Miley!" at the woman until she left.

Once she had left the crowd, Kweli continued the speech by saying, "And take your booty ass shoes, Miley! See, someone like that is a fucking coward...That's a coward right there; that's a coward right there. Anybody whose (inaudible) when people of color or any group of people stands up for themselves if you're threatened by that you're a coward. I know a lot of white brothers and sisters who stand in solidarity for what the fuck I'm saying."

Once his performance was over, Kweli tweeted about the incident:
