D'Angelo will give his first television interview in 10 years. The famed singer will be featured in a two-part special airing Wednesday and Thursday (Sept. 1-2) on The Tavis Smiley Show, which will be on PBS. They will discuss Black Messiah, his musical career and much more. In the clip above, D'Angelo shares how the video for his hit song "Untitled (How Does It Feel)"  changed the course of his life and career. "A lot of the times the crowd or a lot of ladies were just screaming 'take it off'," he said in the clip. "I kind of felt like, for lack of better names, like a male stripper."

The neo soul legend released his critically acclaimed comeback album last December, his first album in 15 years. His before Black Messiah was Voodoo, which dropped in 2000. D'Angelo reportedly rushed the release of his latest album because of the August killing of Michael Brown (and the subsequent non-indictment of his killer, a police officer named Darren Wilson). Sources said that D’Angelo was so moved by protests in Brown’s memory—and the memory of others, like New York’s Eric Garner—that he felt he needed to say something. “The only way I do speak out is through music,” the singer said.

In June, the Virginia native sat down with Bobby Seale, the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, to discuss political protest, the importance of music to the movement and the prison industrial complex. The singer discussed how important it was for artists to sing about social change. He also praised Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, calling it his favorite hip-hop record of late. “He’s jacked into the roots, he respects the lineage,” he said.
