There’s a Black Hippy Posse Cut on Jay Rock’s New Album

Jay Rock has kept his fans waiting long enough. At least, that's what he implied to guests at the listening session for his new album, 90059. Named for the postal code that services parts of Watts and Compton, the LP marks his first major solo appearance since 2011's Follow Me Home. The sage older brother of the TDE crew told those who would listen, including MTV, that the album will "drop unexpectedly like bird shit," channeling Biggie's "Kick In the Door" and leaving fans to speculate about surprise releases. But even more interestingly, those who hit the session report that Black Hippy, the quartet consisting of Rock, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar is in full effect on 90059. There's apparently a posse cut called "Vice City" that was so popular in the preview party that those in attendance demanded an encore.

And that's not the only appearance Rock's crew makes on the record. Kendrick comes back for at least one more song, which those in attendance described as a back-and-forth cut that finds the two rapping immediately after one another. Schoolboy Q joins Rock and Long Beach phenom Vince Staples on another song, where blue outweighs red on the latter's home turf. Perhaps most unexpectedly, 90059 sports a collaboration with Busta Rhymes, where the New York legend spends his bars rapping about Rock's career and artistic progression. At the listening party, the younger MC admitted that he was surprised and humbled the first time he heard Busta's contributions.
