Today, Aug. 11, is the birthday of rapper and A Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Muhammad turns 48 today.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ali Shaheed Muhammad was A Tribe Called Quest's resident DJ/producer from the very beginning. Muhammad, along with Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, released five studio albums and were a pivotal group in the afrocentric Native Tongues Posse before breaking up in 1998 and reuniting in 2004. From their imaginative debut with People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm to their dark, chart-topping Beats, Rhymes and Life, A Tribe Called Quest is regarded as not only hit makers but hip-hop visionaries.

Though the New York native rarely records anymore, Muhammad still lends his voice to other rappers' work and proves he is an undying hip-hop head, hosting his own weekly radio show on NPR called "Microphone Check" and assisted his ATCQ fam when they dropped their 2016 album We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service and performed on Saturday Night Live.

Happy Birthday, Ali Shaheed Muhammad!
