Darius Rucker Reveals Story Behind Hootie and the Blowfish Line in Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems”

Besides the fact that both of their debut albums dropped in 1994, The Notorious B.I.G. and rock band Hootie & The Blowfish have very little if anything in common. But the late legendary MC does namedrop the band's frontman in a line on his song "Mo Money Mo Problems." On the song Big raps, "Stay humble, stay low, blow like Hootie/True pimp niggas spend no dough on the booty."

Obviously, the Brooklyn MC is making a simile connecting Hootie and the blowfish. But apparently the line was deeper than that. During a recent phone interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Hootie front man Darius Rucker said the line actually refers to a specific night when the two met each other at the Grammy's.

“We were at the Grammys, and some really hot girl walks by," said Rucker. "One of [Big's] boys was like, ‘I’ll pay her,’ just as a joke. I go. ‘Man, I’m not paying for it.’ We laughed and then his next record, he’s got a line that goes. ‘Stay humble, stay low, blow like Hootie/True pimp niggas spend no dough on the booty.’ Great line.”

In related Biggie news, Russell Poole, a retired Los Angeles Police Department detective and the lead investigator in the murder of The Notorious B.I.G., has died. According to the Los Angeles Times, L.A. County sheriff’s deputies at the Homicide Bureau reported that Poole passed away Wednesday morning (Aug. 19) after collapsing during a meeting with detectives. Poole was rushed to a local hospital, where he died. TMZ reports that Poole died of a heart attack while interviewing an L.A. County Sheriff’s captain about Biggie’s murder. Poole was interview the captain for a book he was writing about Biggie’s murder case.
