Dr. Dre has released three solo albums over the past 23 years, each with a particularly lofty place in the annals of hip-hop history. The first two, 1992's
The Chronic and 1999's confusingly-titled
2001, are certified classics and helped introduce the world to the likes of Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, Daz Dillinger, RBX, Ms. Roq, Nate Dogg, Xzibit and Eminem. The third,
Compton: A Soundtrack, both ends the 15-year wait for the now-scrapped
Detox and also marks the end of Dr. Dre's career as a solo artist, by his own admission. But each album has one thing in common: they're more collective collaborations than individual solo works, based upon Dr. Dre's vision, ideas and production while giving platforms—both behind the scenes and in front of them—to some of the best artists under Dre's Aftermath umbrella.
Naturally, due to the collaborative nature of the albums, Dre's got some excellent guests stopping by for fantastic feature verses, from the aforementioned MCs to the Kendrick Lamar's and Jon Connor's of today. While each MC acquits themselves incredibly well—shouts out to the D.O.C., Hittman, Time Bomb, King Mez, Jewell and the rest—
