Eminem might be a 16 year vet in the rap game, but he still keeps up with the new school. And Marshall thinks the rap game is in the right hands with the current crop of hot MCs. Shady recently chopped it up with the New York Times about his upcoming film Southpaw and the MC also gave his thoughts on the state of hip-hop as he sees it.

"I try to stay up on everything that’s out," said Em. "I love [Lil] Wayne, Drake, Big Sean, Schoolboy Q. I love Kendrick [Lamar]. I just try to pay attention to what’s out. Wayne puts out a new song, and my ears perk up. There are certain artists that make me do that just because of the caliber that they rhyme at — it’s like candy to me. Kendrick, the way he puts albums together — front to back, they’re like pieces of art. But hip-hop needs Drake, too. Hip-hop needs Big Sean."

Overall, the Detroit rap legend is loving the talent level of the MCs who reign supreme. "I feel like hip-hop is in a good place right now," he said. "There’s this balance of things going on, and it feels like some of the best rappers are the most successful. Sometimes that’s not the case."

Marshall recently dropped an action packed video for the song “Phenomenal,” off the Southpaw soundtrack. The Weeknd and 50 Cent will also be featured on the soundtrack for the film which hits theaters July 24. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Kurt Sutter, Southpaw follows the story of fictional boxer Billy Hope who retires at the height of his fame only to be forced back into the ring to save his family.
