Vince Staples Says Many of the People in His Generation Who Want To Get Married Aren’t Allowed To

Last night (June 10), Long Beach rapper Vince Staples appeared on The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore to discuss Presidential candidates, marriage and why older generations are always prejudiced against those who come after them. Joining a panel that included Wilmore and comedians Mark Yard and Gina Yashere, Staples said, "I feel like it's always gonna be some sort of prejudice toward newer ideas or newer ways of thinking" in response to a question about baby boomers and their skepticism about younger folks. Staples also bucked Wilmore's expectations about a 21-year-old rapper's lifestyle when he reported that he's been in a long-term relationship since well before he was famous. As for marriage, though, Staples qualified the belief that fewer millennials are getting married by saying, "Most of the people in my generation who want to get married aren't allowed to get married." This is presumably a reference to the ongoing fight for marriage rights to be extended to same-sex couples.

Staples is currently prepping the release of Summertime '06, his studio debut on Def Jam. Last fall, he tested the waters with the label, dropping a seven-song EP called Hell Can Wait. The set was adored by critics, especially for the chest-thumping "Blue Suede" and the remarkably prescient "Hands Up," a song that decries police brutality. Summertime '06, due out June 30, is preceded by "Senorita," his Future-sampling lead single.
