Listen to L.A. Clippers’ Guard Lance Stephenson’s Latest Rap Song

Lance Stephenson isn't going quietly into the night. The Brooklyn-born shooting guard, considered a promising talent since 2007, when he was the only junior included on USA Today's all-USA team, seemed to sleepwalk through the last NBA season. His first of a three-year, $27 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets wasn't what many had expected after he starred in his final year with the Pacers. For the 2014-15 campaign, Stephenson was good for a mere 8.2 points per game on 37.6 percent from the floor. But earlier this summer, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers (for Spencer Hawes and Matt Barnes), where he figures to be a third option behind Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. To celebrate, naturally, he dusted off the microphone.

There are rappers who have interesting stores as to how they came up with their stage names, but Stephenson could give them all a run for their money. Bobbito, of Stretch & Bobbito fame, gave the young baller the BornReady moniker during a Rucker Park game the famous DJ was calling. He's no stranger to putting his music out into the world--the Hornets would sometimes play his tracks during shootaround, and he once hopped onto Bobby Shmurda's "Hot N---a" beat. But his latest song, "Poppin," is perhaps his most fully formed. Co-opting the instrumental for Rico Richie's buzzed-about single by the same name, Stephenson taps King TeeRoy and hops back and forth between the booth and the gym. In what will be welcome news for Clippers fans, it sounds like doesn't want to be outworked.
