Lauryn Hill performances make headlines like those of few other artists. There have been those upset but her tardiness, or about her new arrangements of popular songs. But their newsworthiness comes, first and foremost from their scarcity. This August 22-23, those in New York will have a rare chance to see the legendary songstress in person. Ms. Hill will be headlining Afropunk Fest, which will also sport sets from GoldLink, Thundercat, Danny Brown, Kelis, Kaytranada and more. Afropunk was founded in 2005 and has been held every year since; this year, however, the festival is undergoing a major change. Unlike past years, when festival tickets were free, this year they'll be available for purchase--or through a series of community service activities, like landscaping, community advocacy or feeding the hungry. The initiative is called the Afropunk Army.

The details were also announced about AFROPUNK inaugural Atlanta Festival, which takes place Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4 at Atlanta's Central Park.  It features performances from D'Angelo and The Vanguard, Flying Lotus, Santigold, Death Grips, Trash Talk, Danny Brown and more

Hill rose to prominence in the mid-1990s as part of the Fugees. Their second (and final) album, The Score, is seen by many as one of the period's best, most daring works. Just as acclaimed is her 1998 solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. From their, the rapper and singer withdrew from public life, only to reemerge in recent years. Her "Black Rage (Draft)," was a prescient memo amidst the protests in Missouri last summer.
