Last night (June 17), the country was rocked by the news that a lone gunman killed six women and three men at the historically Black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. ABC has identified the victims, which include Reverend and State Senator Clementa Pinckney; the shooter, a 21-year-old white male named Dylann Storm Roof, had recently been pictured wearing the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and the white supremacist state of Rhodesia, reports Time. (Rhodesia is now known as Zimbabwe and enjoys a more equitable form of government.) Earlier today, President Obama addressed the nation, lamenting the prevalence of mass shootings and pointing out that "this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries."
