Drake, Dr. Dre, Pharrell and More to Host Shows on Beats 1 Radio
Apple's foray into the streaming music business shook up the game and now the digital monster is enlisting big names for Beats 1, Apple's upcoming free Internet radio station that will debut next Tuesday, June 30. According to a report from The New York Times, Apple has signed Pharrell, Drake and Dr. Dre to host shows on Beats 1. Drake and Pharrell were rumored to be "celebrity DJ's" in a New York Post article from May 31 and the Times article seems to confirm the report. Dre's involvement comes as no surprise considering his role with Beats and the massive deal he cut with Apple in May of 2014. The Times says that he will have his own show called "The Pharmacy."
Zane Lowe, a renowned DJ known in the States for his wild interviews with Kanye West, was signed by Apple from BBC 1 and got his first big interview for his new employer. Lowe sat down with Eminem for a talk that is scheduled to air during Beats 1's launch week. According to the Times, Lowe spoke with Em about his "work on the music for the new film 'Southpaw,' even his time as a boxer."
The high-profile interview and celebrity DJ's are being used to drive listeners to the new service that Apple hopes will reign supreme in the increasingly competitive streaming music battle.
