Swift penned an open letter to Apple and published it on her Tumblr on Sunday morning (June 21), explaining her reason for keep her new album 1989 off of Apple's new streaming service. "We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation," she wrote. She writes that while she supports Apple's objective of paid streaming she's not cool with the three-month trial period during which Apple will not be paying out royalties to any of the writers, producers, or artists that get their music streamed.

It seems like this deal wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Swift's open letter. Cue told Re/code that after he saw Swift’s letter he spoke with Apple CEO Tim Cook that same day. After, he reached out to Swift and here we are now. “She was thrilled to hear from us and that we were making the change, and we were grateful for that,” Cue said.
