G-Unit, Troy Ave and MGK Take Over Times Square for Starz’ ‘Power’ Premiere
As fans anxiously await June 6th, the day season two of Courtney Kemp Agboh's 50 Cent executive produced Starz series, Power, commences, the cast did some indulging of their own last night, celebrating the second season's run with an NYC premiere. Dubbed #PowerTakesNYC, each of the show's actors including Omari Hardwick, Joseph Sikora, Naturi Naughton, and newcomer, Rotimi Akinosho packed Times Square's Best Buy Theater not only show off the long-awaited follow-up, but 50 also blessed the audience with two hours worth of performances.
For starters, let's just say season two kicks off on steroids. For all those anticipating what will follow last season's unhinged ending, the premiere episode totally fulfills all expectations. Questions about the happenings of Ghost's club, Truth, after the shooting, Tommy's shocking discovery about Angela's profession, and even if Holly, Tommy's love interest survived the shooting, will all be answered, sucking one back into the vortex that fans have waited nearly a year to witness. By the crowd's overzealous and even pure amazement, there's no denying that Kemp Agboh has somehow managed to top the efforts of the highly praised introductory season.
Following what's safe to say was a success of a first episode, 50 Cent wasted no time hitting the stage, stylishly kicking off with non-other than the Power theme song, "Big Rich Town" featuring Joe. With the legendary R&B crooner in tow, both the rapper and the singer added yet another highlight to the seemingly flawless evening. In 50's true crowd pleasing manner, he then unexpectedly passed the mic off to Joe to perform renditions of his timeless classics including "I Wanna Know." G-Unit then hit the stage sans Young Buck, who's currently working out a parole issue, performing new songs like "Big Body Benz," as well as unforgettable cuts like "Stunt 101."
Guests like Elle Varner, MGK, Troy Ave also hit the stage, with Ave and 50 sharing a sort of fan-idol moment, obviously a marker for the rising Brooklyn rapper's career. Power actor, Rotimi Akinosho also surprised attenders with his musical addition, "Lotto," a song featuring 50 Cent sure to be a favorite of ladies nationwide this summer.
All in all, the night was a huge success, unlike any premiere we've seen before. A viewing and a concert all in one, it's seems 50 Cent may again be setting a trend. Premieres are surely going to have to come harder after that. -Miranda Johnson
