M-Bone Dies: Today in Hip-Hop

On this day, May 15, in hip-hop history...

2011:  The life of Cali Swag District's  "M-Bone" Talbert came to an abrupt end on May 15, 2011.

M-Bone was a member of the group Cali Swag District, known best for popularizing the 2000's West Coast dance craze, the dougie. The group's debut single, "Teach Me How to Dougie" peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010. The song and associated dance became the craze of the moment and Cali Swag District managed to ride that wave until the end of the year despite their debut album, The Kickback, being pushed back.

On May 15, 2011, M-Bone was sitting in a parked car when he was shot and killed by a drive-by shooter in Inglewood, California. He was 22-years-old.

After investigating, authorities found that the rapper was shot because of a woman. M-Bone’s friends told investigators that the rapper met a girl when he returned to L.A. from touring and a male tenant who lives in the young woman’s apartment building didn’t approve of the relationship. M-Bone and the tenant got into Twitter fights preceeding the shooting.

Cali Swag District premiered the song, "How to Do That," in M-Bone's honor three days after his death. The crew finally released The Kickback after M-Bone's death in July 2011 under Sphinx Music Entertainment.
