Starting in 2013 with his stellar The Luca Brasi Story, Kevin Gates took the rap world by storm with what seemed like a never-ending stream of material. Where many prolific rappers in the Internet age choose to flood the market with loosies and unorganized zip files, the Baton Rouge bloodhound instead packed each set of songs into neat, tightly-woven mixtapes: after the first Brasi was Stranger Than Fiction, then last year's twin offerings By Any Means and Luca Brasi 2. Now, out of nowhere, Gates is adding to his collection, with the surprise release Murder For Hire. Featuring the just-released "Khaza," the seven-song set features Gates at his heartless, paranoid best. From the first song's nod to Young Thug to the closing shoutout to incarcerated Florida up-and-comer Kodak Black, the "4:30 a.m." rapper is shockingly engaged for someone whose social media accounts have his head so far in the clouds. While the hook on "Rican Johnny" borrows its cadence from previous single "John Gotti," nothing about Gates' work feels staid or like a retread. "Mexico" has him donning dresses like the villains in Big's "Niggas Bleed"; the vocals on "Chico" are drawn out and drawled like little in his catalog. Murder For Hire is a striking release from one of the best rappers working today.
