Kendrick Lamar Receives Generational Icon Award From California State Senate

Kendrick Lamar was given the 35th "Generational Icon Award" by the California State Senate yesterday (May 11). State Senator Isadore Hall presented Kendrick with the honor, which celebrates his work in his native hometown of Compton, Calif. Although he's seen much success in the last four years, K-Dot has remained humble as he continues to serve his community. He's donated funds to the Compton school district and neighboring charities in hopes of improving the city as a whole.

"Being from the city of Compton and knowing the parks that I played at and neighborhoods, I always thought how great the opportunity would be to give back to my community off what I do and music," said Lamar as he accepted his award. "To do that from the city all the way to a state standpoint, and have these young kids look at me as some type of inspiration is really an honor and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for honoring me today."
