If you haven’t heard by now, one of New York’s most notable venues, The Westway, will soon close their doors. The strip club-turned-nightclub will be shutting down on July 1 of this year before being transformed into yet another luxury condo building. While the venue held many fashion events and raves throughout the years, the West Village nightclub was also known for breakthrough, first time performances from some of today’s hottest artists.

SHABAZZ, founder and curator of Electric Circus and “The Player’s Ball,” began hosting frequent events at the beloved venue over the past few years, including debut New York City performances from Migos, iLoveMakonnen, OG Maco, and GoldLink. Just in time to commemorate the success of the club, Shabazz decided that it was only right to bring the woozy soundscapes of emerging Texas rapper Post Malone. After debuting his hit single “White Iverson,” back in February, Post has become a major success with over two million plays of the track via SoundCloud and other smash singles “That’s It” and “Tear$.”

Setting the vibes just right, 19-year-old producer and Awful Records collaborator Hiko Mimoji opened up the night with a DJ set that combined trap-inspired bangers like Fredo Santana and Kendrick Lamar’s “Jealous,” and Future’s “F*ck Up Some Commas,” with jittery, electro-inspired instrumentals. A seamless mesh between Dej Loaf’s “Try Me,” and Zapp’s ‘80’s hit “Computer Love,” appeared to get the crowd just right before Post Malone was set to take stage.

Decked out in his coziest of attire and thriving with energy, Malone made his way to the runway for his debut New York City performance surrounded by screaming fans and alongside Atlanta’s ManMan Savage. Getting right into it, the young upstart opened up with his woozy, hit single “White Iverson,” followed by the infectious “Tear$,” and tribute ballad to the late A$AP Yams “Too Young.” Making the event even more personable, Post brought a few fans on stage to croon along in unison before closing out the night with a finale run through of “White Iverson.”

While his catalogue may not be that extensive, Post Malone made his debut performance quite the experience and the love was transpired right back through the energy from a thriving crowd. While The Westway may be closing their doors, it’s exhilarating to know that Post Malone and The Player’s Ball called the legendary venue home. – Asia Burris
