Artwork Inspired by Mac Dre Will Go on Display in Oakland

Artwork inspired by the late Mac Dre will go on display in the former MC's hometown of Oakland, Calif.

The artwork will be a part of the “Dre Area: The Mac Dre Art Show” exhibit and will feature work from over 40 artists in honor of the slain rapper. Local visual artist Street Beach will curate the showcase along with fellow artists Rebel Stilskin, Acid Bath and Dre's former record label, Thizz Entertainment. Beach was inspired to host the exhibit after seeing a number of Mac Dre inspired social media pages.

"Mac Dre was always being himself, and as a result, he essentially initiated what I’ve seen to be the most positive and prevalent movement in Bay Area urban youth culture," Street Bleach said to Oakland Local. "Basically, the hyphy movement was every young person in the Bay Area getting together to essentially emulate Mac Dre and his personality and his lifestyle, his mannerisms, his fashion — everything. … I feel like Mac Dre is the most respected rapper in Bay Area history."

"Dre Area: The Mac Dre Art Show” opens on Apr. 25 from 5 p.m. to midnight at Charles Place in downtown Oakland. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to the late rapper's family. Real name Andre Hicks, Mac Dre was killed in a shooting while riding as the passenger in a white van on a Kansas City freeway during a concert stop on a tour on on November 1, 2004.
