With their latest mixtape, grammatically ambiguous Georgia trio Travis Porter is following in the long tradition of rap acts paying homage to those who came before them. Sometimes the practice is meant to provoke (Barter 6, anyone?), or is at least called into question ("And KRS already made an album called Blueprint.") Other times, it's done reverently, a new artist or group paying forward what the culture gave them in their formative years. This is the latter. But where you might expect the more serious half of the canon to be revisited and revitalized, the Porter crew is hearkening back to a Miami of yesterday, summoning the spirit of 2 Live Crew for their 3 Live Krew. The 15-song set is bolstered by contributions from D Rich, Cap 1, FKi and Bankroll Fresh, among others.

The trio first rose to prominence at the end of the last decade, filtering through the pre-Future Atlanta airwaves with hits like their Roscoe Dash collaboration "All The Way Turnt Up." They were able to parlay that momentum into a deal with Jive Records; however, the label folded before they were able to release their debut album. From Day 1 was eventually released in 2012 on RCA.
