Kendrick Lamar’s Producers Talk the Making of ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’

Sonically, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is one of the best produced albums of 2015. Every kick, snare, stab and scratch is perfectly crafted and the men behind the boards spoke to REVOLT about the in-studio process. Producers, musicians and engineers Terrace Martin, Mixed By Ali, Tae Beast and Sounwave worked tirelessly on making To Pimp a Butterfly a true piece of art and REVOLT's documentary Out The Cocoon: The Making Of Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' gives the men behind the scenes a chance to give their perspective on the project.

The crew spoke extensively about the little details and influences that made up the album including the crew's trip to Africa, touring, and the music of legends like James Brown, DJ Quik and Branford Marsalis. One of the better parts of the 20-minute-plus documentary was the men describing the "u" studio session. "When we recorded the song it was crazy," said Mixed By Ali. "He just walked in [the studio], cut the lights off, he walked into the booth, locked the door and didn't come out for three hours. So when he did his verse, I'm sitting back recording and it's pitch black everywhere. It was an experience for sure."

"Everybody that walked in the session had tears in their eyes," added Sounwave. "It just hits me every time I listen to it. He put his heart in that one."
