A few years ago, Sweetgreen, a Washington, D.C.-founded health food restaurant, began selling shirts that read "Beets Don't Kale My Vibe." The obvious reference to Kendrick Lamar's "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe," a song from his 2012 debut good kid, m.A.A.d. city--that may or may not have featured Lady Gaga in its early stages--made it popular with those who occupied the intersection of cerebral left coast rap and, well, kale. But with Lamar scheduled to headline the chain's Sweetlife Festival at the end of May, the unlikely pair has taken the next logical step: Lamar now has his own salad with the chain. Called (you guessed it) Beets Don't Kill My Vibe, it includes shredded local kale, roasted chicken, goat cheese, organic wild rice, and flash roasted beets marinated in balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil "and a hint of honey." The salad will be on sale throughout May; 10 percent of the proceeds will go to FoodCorps, a charity that aids in childhood nutrition and education. Lamar is only a month removed from the release of his sophomore album, the sprawling, jazz-infused To Pimp a Butterfly. His calendar for 2015 is packed with festival dates, Sweetlife being among the first. No word yet on whether the salad is a metaphor.
