Z-Ro Says There’s No Unity in the Houston Rap Scene

While some in hip-hop may have their authenticity called into question, Z-Ro, aka The Mo City Don, will never be among them. The Houston rapper is as real as it gets, an open book who is never afraid to rhyme about the pain he feels or the struggle he endures. For over 15 years, Z-Ro’s honest work has earned him a devoted fan base and respect from some of the top artists in the game. While he may not be a household name, Z-Ro has carved out a legacy as a champion for the underdogs. His story connects with his fans in a way that very few artists' do.

But he's also been somewhat of an enigma, particularly outside of his hometown. Houston hip-hop heads wax poetic about his hook mastery, his emotional honesty, his prodigious output and his history with DJ Screw. But to the world outside of his city he's less well-known, whether due to his largely underground or his general aversion to press or promo runs.

But with Z-Ro’s new album Melting The Crown available in stores now, XXL had the chance to catch up with Ro and discuss his latest project. Z-Ro also speaks candidly about his history with the legendary South Park Coalition and Screwed Up Click, the status of his collaboration album with Slim Thug, the current state of the Houston rap scene and much more. —Justin Ivey
