Xzibit’s MTV Show ‘Pimp My Ride’ Wasn’t as Awesome as You Think

Anyone of a certain age who grew up during MTV's TRL era made Xzibit a part of their afternoon with the hit show Pimp My Ride. For those unfamiliar, Pimp My Ride was an MTV show hosted by X to the Z where the rapper would go take a person's beater car, bring it to an automobile shop and equip it with unnecessary bells and whistles including a cotton candy machine, robotic arms, TVs, LED lights and so on and so forth. The show aired from 2004-2007 and had 73 episodes spread out over six seasons.

The Huffington Post recently caught up with a few people who had their rides pimped and discovered that the show was not all it was cracked out to be. According to participants, many of the features added to the cars were simply for the show and removed when filming was done--many times because the addition made the car street illegal. In more severe instances, former participants accused MTV of trying to get them to break up with their significant others for the good of the show. Jake Glazier—a participant of the show—remembered one of the show producers suggested to "basically either get rid of her or have her not be a part of the program" because it would make the storyline of that episode more interesting. Larry Hochberg (co-executive producer of the show) said that he was not aware of this. "Why would we want a kid to break up with his girlfriend?"

In the end, though, each person who had their car pimped said they loved getting the chance to hang out with Xzibi and have no regrets about appearing on the show. Xzibit did not contribute to the story but here is a 10-minute supercut of every Pimp My Ride intro ever:
