The holidays are a time to see old friends, eat (and drink) too much, and sit uncomfortably as your family members say outlandish things. Turns out, that's pretty much how things go at ESPN, too. Last night (Jan. 15), the reliable trio of David Pasch, Bill Walton, and Jay Bilas was covering the Colorado-Arizona game in Tuscon, when Walton decided to play Santa Claus. The one-time NBA player presented Pasch, with a book in honor of the latter being named Arizona's Sportscaster of the Year. Unfortunately, the book Walton gave Pasch--a known creationist--was Charles Darwin's The Origin Of Species, often cited as the foundation for our modern understanding of evolution.

Pasch was visibly uncomfortable, but as he set down Species, attention shifted to Bilas, for whom Walton had purchased a book on Jerry Garcia. "It ain't Jeezy," Bilas said. "But it'll have to do." Going on to praise the Atlanta rapper as "the urban philosopher," Bilas suggested that Walton could "learn a lot" from Jeezy. Couldn't we all?
