If nothing else, DJ Premier has a strong sense of history. In a recent interview with Vlad TV, the legendary producer reflected on his lifetime achievement award from last fall's Global Spin Awards: "I'm so happy to receive it--but I'm like, 'where's Red Alert's award?' He should have got one before me. DJ Hollywood should have got one before me." He added, "I earned it, but I feel like there are so many other DJs that should not have been overlooked."

Preemo brings that same perspective and remove to his new role as a Grammy voter. While he is cognizant of the factors that limit the award show from reflecting the true feelings of hip-hop fans, he hopes to advocate for lesser-known albums to have a place in the mainstream canon.

Of this year's nominees, the Gang Starr producer lavished praise on Los Angeles' Schoolboy Q, whose Oxymoron is considered a frontrunner to win Best Rap Album. He also defended Macklemore, reminding hip-hop fans that the Seattle native was an underground artist who, according to Premier, possesses a sophisticated understanding of the history of the culture.

Macklemore came under fire this time last year, when he and Ryan Lewis' The Heist won the Grammy for Best Rap Album over Kendrick Lamar's good kid m.A.A.d. city. The win--and Macklemore's subsequent decision to post an apology text to Kendrick on Instagram--have been to subject of debate in the year since the awards show.

The 57th Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 8 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
