Common Gives Touching Speech After Winning Golden Globe With John Legend

The 2015 Golden Globes aired this past Sunday (Jan. 11), recognizing actors and actresses with stellar movie and television performances in the past year. Among some of the night's winners were Common and John Legend, who received an award for Best Original Song for Selma's "Glory." The two received standing ovations from the likes of Selma stars, including Oprah Winfrey. What made this win even better was Common's speech that followed. In just a few minutes, Common was able to connect Selma and his role in the creation of "Glory" to the very real racial and equality issues the country is facing at this very moment.

"The first day I stepped on the set of Selma, I began to feel like this was more than a movie. As I got to know the people of the civil rights movement, I realized I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter, killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid,who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers, murdered in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity", said Common.

The Chicago MC then implored everyone in the audience to take action now,"We look to the future and we want to create a better world. Now is our time to change the world. Selma is now."
