Dope, a film produced and narrated by Forest Whitaker and starring, among others, A$AP Rocky, has reportedly sold for over $7 million, sources say. The film will be distributed domestically by Open Road Films and internationally by Sony; the companies reportedly edged out The Weinstein Co. at the 11th hour. The deal went down at Utah's annual Sundance Film Festival and includes a $20 million minimum commitment to marketing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both figures would be among the largest at this year's festival.

Written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar, Our Family Wedding), Dope follows a bookish high school student (Shameik Moore) as he tries to get into Harvard, all the while dodging the perils of his surroundings in Inglewood. In addition to Rocky, the film also features Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Zoe Kravitz and Blake Anderson. Famuyiwa penned the script. The film made its festival debut Saturday night (Jan. 24) to an impassioned reaction and has generated strong word of mouth throughout the weekend.

As for Rocky, while he has been in Utah to promote the film and to perform, his head has understandably been elsewhere. Earlier this month, his friend and mentor A$AP Yams passed away from unknown causes. He was only 26. After a show in Park City, Rocky told Billboard that his set worked mostly "to stop me from crying." Rocky added, "It’s even harder knowing that I gotta fly out in less than an hour just to go bury him--that’s the part that eats at me.”

A release date for Dope has yet to be set.
