On this day, Dec. 16, in hip-hop history…

2011: Brick Squad Monopoly rapper Slim Dunkin, best known for his affiliation with Waka Flocka Flame, was fatally shot in the chest and killed in Atlanta on Dec. 16, 2011.

Born Mario Hamilton in 1987, Slim Dunkin had been making noise with his collaborations with Waka, most notably having been featured on the 2010 debut album, Flockaveli. Dunkin also made appearances on projects from other BSM members, as well as tracks by Gucci Mane and V-Nasty. Dunkin dropped his Menace II Society project in 2010, which was a 20-track mixtape that featured the previously mentioned Gu-Wop, as well as Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy.

According to reports, Dunkin was in a city music studio on the day of his passing, as he prepared to record a Gucci Mane video after getting into an argument with another individual. News would surface later via WSB-TV in Atlanta that the altercation began over a stolen piece of candy. Witnesses says that Dunkin grabbed a piece of candy from another man, which led to an argument and then to a reported fistfight. The scuffle tragically ended with Slim being shot once in the chest. He was then transported to Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man accused of killing the rapper, 28-year-old Vinson Hardimon, also known as Young Vito, turned himself in on Dec. 26 2011. Yung Vito later demonstrated in court how the incident happened, stating "I was just trying to scare him." Hardimon was eventually acquitted of murder, but was later convicted of lesser charges and sent to prison. Hardimon remains behind bars.

R.I.P. Slim Dunkin.
