Total Slaughter may be over but that hasn’t stopped Kid Capri from promoting the historic show. The DJ, producer and event judge is releasing the first ever battle rap album purely dedicated to showcasing the skill of the rappers featured in Total Slaughter called Top Tier.

The Master Of The Mix judge explained that he is truly excited about this upcoming album, probably even more than he was about his last, because he plans to prove that battle rapper can also make good records.

“When I made this album I didn’t think about the radio,” said Capri. “I didn’t think about the club. I didn’t think about none of that. I thought about moving battle rap, letting everybody hear the beats and getting a world tour off of it so that we could push battle rap along.”

He expressed that the key to making a battle rapper sound great on wax has to do with both rhymes and the beats.

“It just take somebody that knows what they doing and that is a fan of battle rap and knows the texture in these people’s voices and put ‘em on the right music and tell ‘em say it like this and say it like that and make ‘em mean on it like this and like that,” Capri said. “A lot of battle rappers don’t have that. They get a producer that give them a track and they just give them a track and they go put the rhymes on it and they concentrate on the rhymes being hot and not the record being hot. But then you got somebody like me that knows music, that is music, I know that they need so that’s why I put this masterpiece together.”

Capri said that people want something new and he believes battle rap is exactly what they’ve been missing. With the album he hopes to continue to push battle rap to new heights because it is “single handedly holding up hip-hop.”—Chris Garner
