The Grammy Awards have not always played fair when it came to implementing. and acknowledging Hip Hop as a staple in the music industry. The ceremony celebrating outstanding achievements in music has been around since 1956, yet a category for Hip Hop has only been around for 25 years...you do the math. Today, the Recording Academy continued to make slow strides in equality for the genre after announcing samples will now be allowed in all songwriting categories, including the infamous and well sought out category, "Song of the Year".

Hip Hip and samples go hand-in-hand, so you can see why this is a small step forward in the right direction for the genre. Radio hits like "Holy Grail" by Jay Z and Justin Timberlake, "Good Life" by Kanye West and "Move That Dope" by Future had no chance of even being in the same room as a Grammy until now.

Here's a list of some notable past "Best Rap Song" winners:

  • 2004: Eminem- "Lose Yourself"
  • 2005: Kanye West- "Jesus Walks"
  • 2009: Lil Wayne- "Lollipop"
  • 2011: Jay Z ft. Alicia Keys- "Empire State of Mind"
  • 2013: Jay Z ft. Kanye West- "Niggas in Paris"
  • 2014: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis- "Thrift Shop"
