De La Soul Hid Limited Copies Of Their New Album Around The World

De La Soul hijacked the moves of the Easter bunny with their latest crusade by hiding 100 vinyl instrumental mixed versions of their J Dilla tribute mixtape, Smell the D.A.I.S.Y., throughout record stores in the U.S., U.K. and Canada.

"The reason we choose to release an all-instrumental version of Smell The Da.I.S.Y. is to give people the experience of a J Dilla beat tape that we were so lucky to receive," De La Soul's Dave Jolicoeur said in a statement via Rolling Stone. "These beat tapes were the springboard that generated creation and inspiration for us."

The Detroit producer, who died in 2006 of a rare blood disease and lupus, has worked with several big name artists ranging from Slum Village to Kanye West. Since his death, tribute concerts, clothing and music have been produced to show how much of an impact he had on and within the industry.

The whereabouts of the limited edition vinyl have been emailed to fans in the form of hints through the mixtape’s original distributor, BitTorrent. BitTorrent initially released the copies to increase awareness for the J Dilla Foundation, whose mission is to provide scholarships to students attending schools with “progressive music curricula” and fund inner-city music programs.

These hidden gems will resemble the tapes J Dilla would send the Roots, Mos Def, A Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli and of course, the Hip Hop trio De La Soul.
