Yesterday, the Oscars committee unveiled the nominees for this year's 86th annual Academy Awards, with films such as American Hustle and Gravity receiving a number of top nods. This year, Pharrell kept his incredible run of hit songs and top accolades going, receiving a Best Original Song nomination for "Happy" off the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, an honor that he said left him "speechless" and "over the moon."

But Skateboard P isn't the only rapper to catch the eyes—and ears—of the Academy. With special shoutouts to Will Smith (AliThe Pursuit Of Happyness), Queen Latifah (Chicago) and Jamie Foxx (Ray as a winner, Collateral)—each of whom left the music world behind to turn their full attention toward Hollywood—XXL has run down the prestigious list of rappers who have taken home the statue throughout the years. The EGOT (Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony) could still be within reach—and we'll find out if Pharrell can get one step closer at the awards on March 2.

10 Rappers That Deserve An Oscar

Rapper: Eminem
Year: 2003
Category: Best Original Song
Winner: "Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile

Eminem was the first rapper to ever receive an Oscar, for the hit song "Lose Yourself" off the soundtrack to his critically-acclaimed and autobiographical 8 Mile. The song was a massive hit, hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the biggest songs of Em's entire, stories career. Em did not show up to accept his Oscar.

Rapper: Three 6 Mafia
Year: 2006
Category: Best Original Song
Winner: "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" from Hustle & Flow

Three 6 Mafia may have had the most random Oscar win of all time, but they also have the distinction of being the only hip-hop group the perform at the Oscars to date. Host Jon Stewart said after they performed the song, "Martin Scorcese: 0; Three 6 Mafia: 1." With Luda coming out to introduce them, the South finally had something to say to the Academy.

Rapper: Ludacris
Year: 2006
Category: Best Picture
Winner: Crash

"Making a killing stunting on imposters / Only rapper in the game with a Grammy and a Oscar," Luda said on "Tell Me What They Mad For," and while that may not entirely be the case (Eminem holds that distinction), he's definitely got a claim. Luda may not have explicitly won this Oscar, but he was one of the co-stars of the Best Picture-winning Crash, which controversially beat out Brokeback Mountain for the top honor in 2006. One thing Luda can boast over Em—his Academy nod was for his acting, whereas Em's was for his song. Either way, not bad company to be in.

Rapper: Diddy
Year: 2012
Category: Best Documentary
Winner: Undefeated

Diddy signed on as an executive producer for this film, which focuses on a football team struggling to achieve success at Manassas High School in North Memphis. The movie reportedly brought Diddy to tears—and then brought him an Oscar victory a few months later, taking the Best Documentary crown. Not bad, Puff.

Rapper: Pharrell
Year: 2014
Category: Best Original Song
Winner: "Happy" from Despicable Me 2

The amazing run for Pharrell continues, as he follows up a fantastic year—which includes multiple Grammy nominations—with an Oscar nod for his work on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. "Happy" is one of the catchiest in a year full of ear-grabbing Pharrell contributions, and its 24-hour music video keeps it perpetually on loop in some circles. Thank God he also made a four-minute version for those of us who can't make it the entire day.
