Eminem and Rihanna have collaborated on a number of records before, producing three hit singles: "Love The Way You Lie" off Em's seventh studio album, Recovery, back in 2010, "Love The Way You Lie (Part II)" off Rihanna's fifth studio album, Loud, back in 2010 and "Numb" of Rihanna's seventh studio album, Unapologetic, back in 2012. So for The Marshall Mathers LP 2, it made sense that Slim asked Rih Rih to be on his album for their fourth collaboration.

Em told Sway for "The Monster" that "as soon as I got the beat I just heard her on it." Shady said "I wanted to make sure that I had it finished first to be able to present to her, but once I had the rhymes done, I sent it to her."

Eminem goes on to say "The perception of the record, what it's saying, I thought it would be a good idea to have her on it because I think people look at us like we're both a little nuts."
