One would be surprised at the number of rappers who have come face to face with death. To the likes of The Game, Kidd Kidd, 50 cent, and Rick Ross; living the fast life has not always been easy. Suffering everything from memory loss to facial reconstruction, hip-hop has literally been through the wire over the years.

Kidd Kidd

In June 2011, Kidd Kidd got shot just a week after meeting his now boss,50 Cent. Attacked and shot six times, the rapper was in a car outside of his mother’s house in New Orleans when two men opened fire after identifying him. Although the incident left Kidd rocking a colostomy bag, experiencing a similar situation, Fif had him performing shows while in recovery to prepare him for the better days that were head.

His response to the whole ordeal, “I feel like how Slim said, “God left me alive, so I can blow up in the world. I thank the man every night for takin’ me off that furly girl, It gave me the opportunity to raise my son in my community, Cause now a days n***** got guns and s***, screamin out unity! M********* a n**** blusing me, Thats something I can’t go for, I done signed the contract, Shut the studio door!”“.

Rick Ross

 

In January 2013 after celebrating his 37th birthday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Rick Ross became the target of a drive-by shooting. At around 5 a.m., after eating a late meal at a diner, a gunman unloaded about two dozen bullets into Ross' Rolls Royce.

In an attempt to flee the shooting, Ross crashed his vehicle, hitting local businesses. Ross survived the accident unharmed, however the gunman escaped leaving the case unsolved.

Eminem

In December 2007, Eminem overdosed on pills around Christmas time, relapsing a month later. After some time, Eminem was able to get sober unleashing many of the unhealed wounds that led to the usage, through his music.  Em detailed his addiction on his album Relapse and again on the followup LP Recovery.

Appearing in a documentary this year, titled "How To Make Money Selling Drugs," Eminem details his previous addiction stating, "When I took my first Vicodin, it was like this feeling of 'Ahh.' Like everything was not only mellow, but [I] didn't feel any pain," said Eminem. "I don't know at what point exactly it started to be a problem. I just remember liking it more and more. People tried to tell me that I had a problem. I would say 'Get that f*cking person outta here. I can't believe they said that sh-- to me. I'm not out there shooting heroin. I'm not f*cking out there putting coke up my nose. I'm not smoking crack."

The Game

In October 2001, The Game was shot five times at his former apartment  in Compton. Said to be a drug-deal-gone-wrong, the rapper suffered a three-day coma following the shooting. Game often cites the incident as reasoning for his pursuit after a rap career. The near death experience caused the rapper to turn his life around, leaving the old habits behind.

Khujo

In June 2002 the Goodie Mob member was involved in a life threatening car accident resulting in the loss of his right leg. The rapper had his limb amputated below the knee down due to the injuries sustained in the collision.

The rapper responded to the whole ordeal stating, “I’d be like, “Damn, man, that’s kinda messed up, but shit, he gotta keep going.” I kinda put myself in that frame of mind. You out here, man, you wounded [and] it’s like a war. When you wounded in a war, you gotta patch that shit up and keep going and keep bussin’ as hard as you can”.

Kanye West

In October 2003,while driving home from a recording studio in California, West fell asleep at the wheel and was involved in a near-fatal car crash. As the incident served as the reasoning behind Kanye’s breakthrough record "Through The Wire", Yeezy certainly turned his tragedy triumphant.

As a result of the accident, the rapper’s jaw had to be wired shut and he sustained several facial reconstructive surgeries.

2. The D.O.C.

The D.O.C

On his way home from a party, The D.O.C.,crashed his car resulting in a life altering injury. Not wearing a seat belt, the once Fila Fresh Crew member and N.W.A associate required 21 hours of plastic surgery.

Finally released after two-and-a-half weeks in the hospital, The D.O.C couldn't speak for a month and the accident impaired his vocals indefinitely putting an end to his rap career. However, following the incident, he did remain active in hip-hop serving as a ghost writer for Dr. Dre and a host of others.

50 Cent

On May 24, 2000 50 Cent was attacked by a gunman outside his grandmother’s then home in South Jamaica, Queens. Shot nine times at close range, he was hit in the hip, hand, chest, arm, both legs, and left cheek. His grandmother who happened to be outside at the time, called authorities which saved 50′s life.

In March 2013 Lil Wayne overdosed on cough syrup. Hospitalized for several days after suffering a series of seizures, reportedly during a video shoot for the Nicki Minaj song “High School", Weezy used the health scare as motivation to get clean.

Following the incident, Lil Wayne shot a vlog where he promised he was “more than good,” and proved this by going on tour with T.I. in July.

In October 2006 while riding passenger in an SUV, Cassidy collided with a U-Haul truck. Suffering a fractured skull along with other injuries, Cassidy was in a coma for  nearly a week. Also entailing temporary brain damage, the rapper had to basically start over, learning everything step by step, even his hit songs.

He spoke about the life changing event stating, "When I first woke up out of my coma, I had amnesia, so I couldn't really remember everything. I didn't have full amnesia; I could remember certain things."
