Nas Is Helping People Find Jobs

Nas - "Dance" God's Son (2002)

Nasty Nas has been spreading his money around in a series of investments of late, most recently with a San Francisco startup that aims to help people in their job search. The company, called Proven, has built an app that allows people to apply to jobs using their smartphones, simplifying the process for the average job seeker.

“Jobs are a concern for the nation, and Proven is all about that, so I’m all about Proven,” Nas told the Los Angeles Times last week. “Hip-hop artists, especially the older ones, are the ones who knew hip-hop was a worldwide phenomenon before the mainstream caught on, so hip-hop artists are forward thinkers. We want to stay with the new.”

Proven has gotten off to a slow start, having been founded in 2009 by then-graduate student Pablo Fuentes, who then was forced to lay off all but one member of his staff in 2011 after a series of false dawns. Now, however, Fuentes has an office in San Francisco with four employees, with his apps totaling 500,000 downloads and 150,000 monthly active users, according to the Times. The company aims to help those without access to a computer or computer programs to compete in the online job market.

Nas was reportedly introduced to Fuentes by Rap Genius investor Andreessen Horowitz, and contributed to the company’s latest $1 million rounds of investment. He will operate as an advisor and will help promote the app.

“What he chose to do with his time and his life was noble,” Nas told the paper of his opinion of Fuentes. “He struck me as a smart person with a good heart.”
