Macklemore and Ryan Lewis beat out stiff competition tonight to win the 2013 MTV Video Music Award for 'Best Hip Hop Video.'

"They let some independent hip hop artist up here at the VMAs!" Macklemore proclaimed when he went onstage in Brooklyn at Barclays Center to accept his moon man. The XXL Freshman's "Can't Hold Us" beat out others like Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools" and Drake's "Started From The Bottom."

The duo then performed their feel-good song "Same Love."

Recently, the Seattle rapper told MTV that he would be performing his "Same Love" at the awards show because of its universal message. "There is a lot more people that are familiar with it now than six months ago and the timing is perfect," he said. "It's a powerful record and it needs to be heard in America right now. And equality is at the forefront of what's going on in politics right now."
