Flavor Flav Says Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, And Drake Are “Not Real Hip-Hop”

nelly_flava

According to Flavor Flav, hip-hop has come to a fade. Although he believes there are many “great rap records” out there, according to him the principle elements that birthed the era no longer exist.

“There’s no more of that, ‘Wave your hands in the air like you just don’t care,’ you know, something that makes you wanna get out there and breakdance,” the public enemy member told Gigwise. “Rap music has lost that element right now, mainly over in America. There’s not too many great Hip Hop records out there, but there are some great rap records”. Continuing naming many of music’s most prominent artists, the former hype man did dish credit where it is due. “Lil Wayne is making some great rap records, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, Snoop [Lion] – everybody is making great rap records, but it’s not Hip Hop.”

The hip-hop veteran blamed slow tempos for the culture’s hiatus stating, “I think the element of Hip Hop left when Rap music started being created on a slow tempo. It’s just stayed there for years. Right now, a lot of rap music today is being created at very low tempos.”

Rapper Chuck D who also sat in on the interview added,”When it’s just about ‘I got money and you don’t have money’, that’s just taking advantage of the naivety of people.”

  • Ronald Jack

People on here are too caught up in their love for current artists. Public Enemy was major group in hip hop so their opinion is valid. If you don’t agree with them that’s ok but don’t act like they are not qualified to speak on hip hop.

  • Ramon Rojo

Chuck D is one of the greatest lyricist ever, Flavor Flav is a coon ass hype man, to say Kendrick Lamar and Hov ain’t hip hop is like saying Elvis and Led Zeppelin ain’t rock n roll. Flavor Flav is right about that lightskin pop bitch tho

    • Roger Brown

stop hatin on the light skin niggas you overcooked french fry

      • Blakbyrd

Who is public enemy… You must very young. But anyway, Flav is right. ALL RAP ISN’T HIP HOP. AND TODAY’S RAP ISN’T HIP HOP. Though, a kid named Astro has that sound though. Check him out

  • shurnam

Its true. The records we are listening to are great rap records. Not hip hop records. Most pure hip hop music is indie. If you don’t listen to college radio or check out inide music festivals you probably wouldn’t know what I mean. For example Murs, Hieroglyphics, Jean Grae, and MF Doom is hip hop. All indie artists who perform on the indie tour circuit.

  • BUZZ TRENT

Actually, Flav is correct! He isn’t discrediting anyone. All he is saying is what RAP MUSIC has become, has divulged from the core elements of what THE HIP HOP CULTURE was based on (break dancing, graffiti, deejaying and emceeing). Think about it, niggas don’t even have real deejays on their stage shows. Just some dude pressing play and the artist rapping along with the record. THE RECORD WITH THE VOCALS STILL ON IT. Niggas don’t even have the decency to rap over instrumentals any more. Jay Z may the only dude that refuses to perform his songs with the vocals still on it. When was the last time you seen a popping artist right now give his deejay a 4 minute set to fuck up the crowd? FLAV IS RIGHT.

    • Blakbyrd

all true..this is nothing new though

    • dub

idk if thats what hip hop is…. if thats the case kanye is hip hop, and there arent many hip hop artist out, there never were according to this

  • lewis

he is right about everything apart from where he said lil wanye and drake are making good records because their are the ones who fucked hip hop up in the first place

  • Zontray Harris

What is Hip-Hop figuratively speaking? That is just an opinion no one can prove whether or a musician is true hip-hop to me anything and everything is a art…….well to a point. And there’s plenty of music that makes you want to dance and gets people excited but also still has a message behind it Kendrick Lamar swimming pools is a prime example or even Lupe Fiasco’s b**** bad its just not the speaking on political problems like there music did and he to me didn’t even make music lol Flava Flav was a reality star

  • Ehired Ehired

Things could definitely be looking up for Mr Flav, Internet Giant
E-HIRED is attempting to contact Flavor to possibly negotiate a rumored
seven figure endorsement deal with the former fried chicken entrepreneur and
recording star to act as a spokesperson for the video employment website

One of my favorite P.E. songs is ‘Black Steel…’ . It didn’t have a fast tempo, so I don’t know what Flav’s goin’ on about.
