Recently, the iconic R&B crooner R. Kelly has had a resurgent of sorts, though not exactly with his typical demographic. Rather than being re-embraced by the soul-heads who fell in love with Kells at different times throughout his storied, decades-long career, Kells has surprisingly found new fans in hipsters. And with his headlining performance at this past weekend's Pitchfork Festival—helmed by an indie website that famously celebrates alternative music—it seems like he's embracing his new fans with open arms. Check out our list of R. Kelly's most hipster moments.

R. Kelly goes retro with his Love Letter album

Something hipsters love to do is embrace retro culture and recycle it for their own benefit. Fittingly, in 2010, R. Kelly went old-school for his 10th studio album Love Letter, penning a soulful project filled with tunes about lost love and regret.

R. Kelly writes a book... about himself

While hipsters love repurposing retro culture when they make music, they also love to write about themselves. Just head to any coffee shop in Brooklyn, and you'll find hordes of "writers" pecking away at their laptop keys and cleverly updating their Facebook statuses. In the ultimate hipster move, Kells put out a book called Soulacoaster: The Diary Of Me in 2012. As you might imagine, it's as ridiculous as it sounds.

R. Kelly brings Trapped In The Closet to indie TV network IFC

We all remember when R. Kelly first put out his R&B opera Trapped In The Closet, a genre-bending saga that detailed the tangled lives and romantic relationships of a group of somehow-intertwined people in Chicago. But in December of 2012, Kells made history by teaming with indie TV network IFC (home to famously hipster shows like Comedy Bang! Bang! and Portlandia) to release new chapters of Closet. They're definitely worth watching.

R. Kelly performs with Phoenix at Coachella Music Festival

Close to the end of their headlining performance on the last night of this year's Coachella Music Festival, French pop quartet Phoenix melted the world's minds by bringing out the universally-loved R. Kelly for a quick run through of his biggest hits, including "Ignition (Remix)" and "I'm A Flirt."

R. Kelly takes a photo with Tyler, The Creator

This is pretty self-explanatory. Who would've thought R. Kelly would find something in common with the Golf Wang general?

R. Kelly headlines Pitchfork Music Festival

On the final night of Pitchfork Music Festival, R. Kelly capped off an alternative-heavy weekend—with performances from Bjork, Solange, Toro Y Moi and Parquet Courts—with a headlining set by R. Kelly. As expected, he killed it, capping off his run for President of hipster culture.
