Earl Sweatshirt Dislikes Jay-Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’

earl_sweat_photo

Everyone seems to have an opinion on Jay-Z’s twelfth studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail. We recently shared our thoughts in our review, but other artists have mixed feelings on arguably the biggest project of the summer.

Earlier today, Earl Sweatshirt spoke out about the album and had a lot to say. He tweeted that his fans should unfollow him if they liked Magna Carta. His mini-rant continued with him saying he hopes the quality of his music is judged rather than how big his name is. Did Early Man burn his bridge to Hov? Read his tweets below.

While I agree, I think it’s a pretty terrible decision to trash the number one figure in hip hop. Nothing to be gained

  • jimbo_slice1

  • da black goku

he’s right. MCHG was an average album by an average rapper

    • BANGBANG

Blasphemy. I give it a L-XL depends on my mood.
AOY so far IMO: Born Sinner>Run The Jewels>MCHG>Watching Movies>Yeezus

      • Joon

Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap project was better than all of those albums. I love how half the people on this site only rank albums by the names of the artists rather than the quality of the work. Those are mediocre albums with big names, except for Watching Movies. Mac is much improved on that album. The rest were average. Nothing special about them. Acid Rap destroys all of them, and if I know Earl, he’ll kill all of those rappers with his Doris album, too.

        • BANGBANG

1 acid rap is a mixtape not an album or else logic would’ve been on that list 2 Born Sinner shits on any album I’ve heard since “Life is Good” and 3 Earl is just a fucking kid desperate for attention. if you rank him anywhere near the top pass the shit youre smokin quick. Earl might be the best on ofwgkta but couldnt even see anyone on FV or Shady.

      • Trevor Edwards

Yeezus was so bad it isn’t even funny.

        • BANGBANG

agreed, just put it on there for the Kanye dick riders

      • http://thespiralcase.net/ kayyyak

have you been only listening to the last month of music?

        • BANGBANG

It’s been a good month… and honestly I dont know all the albums that came out this year. I definitely forgot ghostface’s album though

  • the_truth_is…

“i hope that opinions on my material throughout my career are based on the quality of it and not how big my name is”

The point he’s trying to make is that people are fans of the moves Jay makes (myself included), and sometimes that induces us to put everything he does on a pedestal. In my opinion MCHG was mediocre at best.

  • UK

some of these young guys just got no damn discipline….throwin out random diss remarks at aritsts/albums just makes you a straight up hater, nothin else

  • トラップの神々TRAP GODS

EARL GOT HIS RIGHT NOT TO LIKE MCHG UNLIKE THESE HOMELESS SHEEP WHO ONLY LIKE WHAT IS POPULAR TO BLEND THEY UGLY ASS IN CIRCLES LOOKING DUMB MCHG IS FOR FLAVORLESS WHICH OBVIOUS WHOM LIKE IT,THE FLAVORLESS JOBLESS MONEYLESS

  • Carl

MCHG is a mediocre album but why is this even an article

  • Rigby

Yall trippin bruh. How is this news? It’s his opinion. Wtf

  • Owen T

I don’t really see a problem here. Earl has as much right anyone to state an opinion on music. You don’t have to agree with it, but at least acknowledge that he can say whatever he wants

  • Leroy Love

I would agree that MCHG is mediocre if it is being compared to the all time classics going way to RunDMC’s Raising Hell, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic etc…. but if you comparing MCHG to today’s music than I would have to say its pretty damn good. I personally think Reasonable Doubt was Jay Z’s best album, but I’m old school.

  • Ronald Jack

“What the hell have you done,
To even have an opinion on what I been doing,” – Jay-z.
Magna Carta wasn’t terrible it just isn’t good for a Jay-z album because we know what he is capable of.

  • BANGBANG

“How should I begin this? Im just so offended, How am i even mentioned with all these fucking beginners?”

  • bangbang

    Doris>Magna Carta

  • Joon

Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap project was better than MCHG and so were a few other albums. I love how half the people on this site only rank albums by the names of the artists rather than the quality of the work just as Earl says. That is a mediocre album with a big name. If you really dig deep into it, it was average. Nothing special about it. Acid Rap is AOTY so far, and if I know Earl, he’ll annihilate MCHG with his Doris album, too. Just because someone has made great albums, doesn’t mean their latest album should be held as godly before it even gets heard. Otherwise, all of you would have been the fools saying Eminem’s Relapse album was outstanding.

Another thing, half of you sit here and criticize Earl for not breaking down WHY he hated the album. What criticisms he had. He only had 140 characters. I’ll sit here and tell you what I dislike about it, but I’d LOVE to see any of you peons sit here and tell me what it is that sets MCHG above any other album. What is so dam special about it? I have yet to see even ONE person defend it and break down WHY they love it. If you wanna ask me why Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap is AOTY, I will. Song by song, and I’ll explain the genius conceptual development, wordplay, instrumentals, mixes, variation of styles, and intertwining of songs. Love to see any of you show what is so special about MCHG when it’s plain to see it’s purposeless and bland. It’s not a fucking album. It’s a compilation of tracks that don’t fit together. That’s why it is average.

  • SlickGoose

His comments on the album were on point, that album was lyrically weak. Over hyped
