Kendrick Lamar received the Vanguard Award at ASCAP's Rhythm and Soul Music Awards in Los Angeles last night (June 27), and was honored by mentor and collaborator Dr. Dre. The Compton MCs worked together extensively on tracks such as "The Recipe" and "Compton" preceding Lamar's major label debut with Aftermath/Interscope, good kid, m.A.A.d city last year.

“Kendrick Lamar is a class act,” Dr. Dre said before introducing K.Dot. “I’m proud to know him. I’m proud to work with him and he is an important part of the new generation of hip-hop."

2 Chainz and OVO member/Drake collaborator Noah "40" Shebib shared honors for Songwriter of the Year, while Diddy and L.A. Reid teamed with ASCAP president Paul Williams, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to present the Golden Note Award to Usher.
