This Weekend’s Best Shows at SXSW

Now that you know about the must-see indie acts on the rise at this year’s SXSW festival, we’ve decided to lace you with a breakdown of the best hip-hop showcases at this year’s festival. While one of our editors runs around Austin and live-tweets about delicious cart food and fun concerts, the rest of the XXL staff is sitting here in New York, pretty jealous of all the rap there is to be heard this weekend. RZA’s Soul Temple Records Showcase

RZA calls upon Wu vets like Inspectah Deck, U-God and Ghostface to perform alongside newcomers Vinny Cha$e and Elzhi.

This might be the most ridiculous party of the weekend, and that only makes sense when these three powerhouse labels come together to curate an event. Our must-sees at this 14-hour rager – A-Trak, Riff Raff, Mr Muthafuckin Exquire, Antwon, Classix, and RL Grime.

This is Chicago party all the way, featuring GLC, Chance the Rapper, Sir Michael Rocks, and drill newcomers like Lil Durk and Katie Got Bandz.

2Dopeboyz and Nah Right Present Dopehouse! Part Deux

With a line-up that includes veterans like Talib Kweli and Trae the Truth, as well as indie favorites like Sir Michael Rocks and Alexander Spit, Meka and Shake’s second round at SXSW promises to be event where the music and social atmosphere take precedence over industry politicking.

Sofa King Raw Entertainment Showcase

Sofa King Raw Entertainment offers one of the more unusual hip-hop showcases at SXSW. Don’t let that deter you, however, as Skratch Bastid’s DJ set will undoubtedly entertain turntable enthusiasts, while Phranchyze’s opening set should prove to be a stand-out among new artists

Vice keeps it all rap with headlining performances by Flatbush Zombies, A$AP Ferg, Danny Brown, Action Bronson and the original OG, Ghostface Killah.

Green Label Sound Showcase

The Mountain Dew-sponsored label brings Joey Bada$$ and DJ Premier back together after putting out “Unorthodox” for headlining sets, after opening sets by DyMe-A-DuZin and Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt.

Move Forward Music

Move Forward brings the old school and underground hip-hop to Austin, TX with a line-up that finds storied veterans like CL Smooth and Evitan rocking alongside respected newcomers like Ratking and Soul Khan. Headlining the event are Elzhi and Talib Kweli, promising that the event will be one for the truest for hip-hop heads.

Moodswing 360 x Karmaloop Showcase

With a massive set list that spans multiple genres, Moodswing and Karmaloop offer hip-hop fans an assortment of emcees to check out, including Outasight, Kool AD and Heems of Das Racist, Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and others.

Brooklyn Vegan SXSW Showcase

The Brooklyn blog heads to Austin with a diverse lineup of indie heroes like fashion rapper Zebra Katz, Brooklyn locals The Underachievers, and the always-outlandish Mykki Blanco.

Flosstradamus Presents Turn Up! SXSW

Trap heroes are playing a lot of shows at this year’s South By, but that didn’t stop them from putting together their own party. The lineup features DJ duo Supreme Cuts, Mykki Blanco, and of course, a set by the Chicago duo who set the whole thing up.

Fader Fort Presented by Converse

Fader is famous for consistently pulling together an incredibly weird but awesome lineup to every South By. Their fort will be open all day from Thursday through Saturday night. Some notable acts worth seeing include Trinidad Jame$, Future, Earl Sweatshirt & Captain Murphy, French Montana, and DJ Ryan Hemsworth.

AllHipHop’s #New Atlanta

AllHipHop brings some of Atlanta’s hottest new acts to SXSW this year with their #NewAtlanta showcase. Performances will include Trinidad Jame$, Rich Homie Quan, Two9, Grip Plyaz and more.
