    XXL Presents...2Pac's 16 Greatest Verses
Tomorrow (September 13) marks the 16th anniversary of the passing of one of hip-hop's most prolific and lionized MCs, Tupac Amaru Shakur. The date remains a reminder of the rapper's short life and even shorter career. It also calls for celebration. On one of <em>All Eyez on Me</em>'s many standout cuts, "No More Pain" 'Pac vehemently spits a line that echoes his looming legacy today: "When I die, I want to be a living legend/Affiliated with this muthafuckin' game, with no more pain." Eerie yet clairvoyant, the potent line is one of many spat by the self-proclaimed <em>musical mercenary</em> that evokes strong diction and raw emotion.<br /><br />Although he wasn't known to be the most lyrical on the mic, the fiery rapper managed to draw listeners through his signature deep-rooted, rebel spirit and ferocious tongue, all allowing him to pour himself out through lyrics. To celebrate his life and legacy <em>XXL</em> compiled a list of Pac's 16 greatest verses in no particular order.—<em>XXL</em> (<a href="http://www.twitter.com/xxl">@XXL</a>)
  • "Thugz Mansion" [Verse 3] <em>Better Dayz</em> (2002)
    "Thugz Mansion" [Verse 3] <em>Better Dayz</em> (2002)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> A highlight off his posthumous <em>Better Dayz</em> release, 'Pac's depiction of heaven is so clear-cut, it's almost eerie as he kicks rhymes about seeing a Marvin Gaye show and meeting Billie Holiday. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "Little Latasha sho' grownTell the lady in the liquor store that she's forgiven, so come home/Maybe in time you'll understand only God can save us"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Cz_nOpxgCU?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Cz_nOpxgCU?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "Hail Mary" [Verse 2] <em>Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory</em> (1996)
    "Hail Mary" [Verse 2] <em>Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory</em> (1996)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> It wasn't only what he said, but how he said it. 'Pac could bring a simple line to life with his ferocious flow—one that sounded like he was rapping from the pit of his stomach—making for relatable verses. On "Hail Mary" he managed to become the voice of the incarcerated without even having to rhyme from behind bars. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "Penitentiaries is packed with promise-makers/Never realize the precious time that bitch niggas is wasting/Instutionalized, I live my life a product made to crumble"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3SQVBsJG9Rs?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3SQVBsJG9Rs?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

    "Ambition Az A Ridah" [Verse 3] <em>All Eyez On Me</em> (1996)
    <strong>X-Ray:</strong>Pac kicked off his tour de force of an album, 1996's <em>All Eyez On Me</em>, on a high note providing <em>murderous lyrics equipped with spirits of the thugs before him</em> <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "Question my methods to switch up speeds, sure as some bitches bleed/Niggas'll feel the fire of my mother's corrupted seed/Blast me but they didn't finish,/Didn't diminish my powers/So now I'm back to be a motherfucking menace"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cQZqPi1aHNo?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cQZqPi1aHNo?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • 2PacTheOutlawzPacOz
    "Hit Em Up" (1996)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> Pusha T had a line in 2010 that went, "Rap ain't been this hard since 'Hit Em Up'." Years later, Pac's scathing yet controversial diss track remains one of the game's rawest, confrontational records to date. Heck, the ad-lib before his actual verse was even menacing. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "Grab your Glocks when you see 2pacCall the cops when you see 2Pac/Who shot me? But your punks didn't finish/Now you about to feel the wrath of a menace/Nigga I hit em up!"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9hZR1Ye6xg0?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9hZR1Ye6xg0?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "If I Die 2nite" [Verse 2] <em>Me Against The World</em> (1995)
    "If I Die 2nite" [Verse 2] <em>Me Against The World</em> (1995)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong>'Pac ponders on death, but stays strapped in the process on <em>Me Against the World</em>'s opener. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "Polishing pistols prepare for battle pass the pump/When I get to popping niggas is dropping then they done/Calling the coroner come collect the fucking corpse/He got it by killer, preoccuppied with being boss"<object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/E4wUf1GG48o?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/E4wUf1GG48o?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

"Death Around the Corner" [Verse 1] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
    <strong>X-Ray:</strong>The rebellious 'Pac is in full-blown effect as soon as the track kicks open. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "I see death around the corner, gotta stay high while I survive/In the city where the skinny niggas die/If they bury me, bury me as a G nigga, no need to worry/I expect retaliation in a hurry"<object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UyypOJofZmI?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UyypOJofZmI?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "Me Against the World" [Verse 3] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
"Me Against the World" [Verse 3] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong>On the reflective "Me Against the World," 'Pac delivers some food for thought on the record's closing lines.<br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"The message I stress: to make it stop study your lessons/Don't settle for less - even the genius asks his questions/Be grateful for blessings/Don't ever change, keep your essence/The power is in the people and politics we address"<object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-wcBDjXhOZk?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-wcBDjXhOZk?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto" [Verse 1] <em>R U Still Down?</em>
"I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto" [Verse 1] <em>R U Still Down? (Remember Me)</em>
    <strong>X-Ray:</strong>One of 'Pac's potent rhymes about seeing which was interpolated in "Changes." <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other/And though it seems heaven-sent/We ain't ready, to have a black President, huh"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wgs0fiYbhck?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wgs0fiYbhck?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "Dear Mama" [Verse 1] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
    "Dear Mama" [Verse 1] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
    <strong>X-Ray:</strong>Everyone, at some point in life, has quoted this record as 'Pac shares some beautiful words about his mother, Afeni Shakur—and keeps it real nonetheless. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"And even as a crack fiend, mama/You always was a black queen, mama/I finally understand, for a woman it ain't easy tryin to raise a man"<object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4rpDmqRrnaI?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4rpDmqRrnaI?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "Brendas Got A Baby" <em>2Pacalypse Now</em> (1991)
    "Brendas Got A Baby" <em>2Pacalypse Now</em> (1991)
    <strong>X-Ray:</strong>An important record in his career, "Brenda's Got a Baby" is by far one of 'Pac's most acclaimed pieces of work to date. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"I hear Brenda's got a baby,but Brenda's barely got a brain/A damn shame/The girl can hardly spell her name/(That's not our problem, that's up to Brenda's family)/Well let me show ya how it affects the whole community"<object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NRWUs0KtB-I?version=3&hl=en_US"/><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"/><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NRWUs0KtB-I?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"/></object>
  • "Keep Ya Head Up" [Verse 1] <em> Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.</em> (1993)
    "Keep Ya Head Up" [Verse 1] <em> Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.</em> (1993)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> For as much as 2Pac repped for the Thug Life, he certainly was also in touch with his introspective side, especially on "Keep Ya Head Up." "Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice/I say the darker the flesh, then the deeper the roots." 'Pac definitely had listeners' ears wide open with those lines.<br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "You know what makes me unhappyWhen brothers make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy/And since we all came from a woman/Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman/I wonder why we take from our women/Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rFeHZCzaxZ4?version=3&hl=en_US"/><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"/><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rFeHZCzaxZ4?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"/></object>
  • "So Many Tears" [Verse 3] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
"So Many Tears" [Verse 3] <em>Me Against the World</em> (1995)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> "To embrace an early death, now there's nothing left," he rhymed. 2Pac said the bone-chilling words on this epic cut on which scathing suicidal and demonic thoughts were served. <br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"I had my mind full of demons trying to break free/They planted seeds and they hatched, sparking the flame/Inside my brain like a match, such a dirty game/No memories, just a misery/Painting a picture of my enemies killing me, in my sleep/Will I survive til the morning to see the sun/Please Lord forgive me for my sins cause here I come"
  • "Krazy" [Verse 2] <em>Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory</em> (1996)
    "Krazy" [Verse 2] <em>Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory</em> (1996)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> The conviction with which 2Pac spit was the same conviction to which fans hung onto every syllable and word he uttered. This verse off crazy embodies that sentiment.<br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"I see bloods and crips runnin' up the hill/Lookin' for a better waayyyy/My brothers and sisters it's time to bail/'Cause even thug niggas praayyyy."<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UVKkS8bfsRI?version=3&hl=en_US"/><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"/><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UVKkS8bfsRI?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"/></object>
  • "Heartz Of Men" [Verse 4] <em>All Eyez on Me</em> (1996)
"Heartz of Men" [Verse 4] <em>All Eyez on Me</em> (1996)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> Unforgiving, tell it like it is and in your face. Perhaps they're the best way to describe how 'Pac handled many tracks, this one being a prime example.<br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong>"I died and came back/I hustle with these lyrics as if it's a game of crack/Thuggin' is in my spirit, I'm lost and not knowing/Scar'd up, but still flowing/Energized and still going"
  • "White Man'z World" [Verse 2] <em>Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory</em> (1996)
    "White Man'z World" [Verse 2] <em>Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory</em> (1996)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> The mere title provided plenty of food for thought. Then, 'Pac layered the title with offering up harsh realities of the streets. "Bein' born with less, I must confess only adds on to the stress/Two gunshots to my homie's head, died in his vest." Damn. Does it get more realer than that?<br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "Bein' born with less, I must confess only adds on to the stress/Two gunshots to my homie's head, died in his vest/Shot him to death and left him bleedin' for his family to see/I pass his casket gently askin, is there heaven for G's"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Jn_agQa0LdU?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Jn_agQa0LdU?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  • "Str8 Ballin'," <em>Thug Life, Vol. 1</em> (1994)
    "Str8 Ballin'," [Verse 4] <em>Thug Life, Vol. 1</em> (1994)
<strong>X-Ray:</strong> Getting high, making and blowing money fast and ballin' outta control are all elements that are front and center on "Str8 Ballin.<br /><strong>Best Lines:</strong> "To my niggas in the penitentiaryLoc up like a muthafucka when they mention me/Cause you fuckin' with the realest muthafucka ever born/And, once again, it's on, I'm busting on these bitches till they gone/Now who the hell can you get to stop me?"<br /><object width="620" height="25"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2_aKY25JQYM?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2_aKY25JQYM?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="620" height="25" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
