In all honesty, paid dues is paid dues (and as a DJ, she’s a veteran no matter how good she may or may not be). Does it matter if she first string or second string for Salt & Pepa? I watched Erykah Badu get paid a ridiculous amount of money do “DJ” an event and was thoroughly buggin’! I stood by and watched Nick Cannon “DJ” an event and it hurt me to my core. Not just because I know he got paid 5 figures and didn’t even come close to “gettin down”, but I know how long I’ve put in at this profession and without the celebrity name, I won’t see that in a night, yet will put folks in a headlock! Spin has a very valid point. These folks are making low to mid 5 figures with a laptop full of music, a name and very little skill/talent while veterans at the craft (working on NYE or not) are continuously being passed by like the Pharcyde! It’s highly disrespectful…and for the record, this is not coming from a bitter place as I’m making a pretty good living at this. Her point is very well taken!

Alicia Keys only DJ’d one time & she was just having fun with Swizz who is a DJ! The others were just having fun too. No one is having a career change & coming after her money. She needs to hush!

I actually agree with shorty a little. Ok, erase the fact that my 6 year old nephew could probably murder shorty on the turntables (if she even uses them anymore). But she does have a point.

Having appreciation for the artform is different than being an actual DJ. DJing is difficult and there are a lot of rules involved. And it’s a craft that’s master after years and years of successfully applying your craft in the party setting.

Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, and several others may be decent DJs. But the fact that they are all now on some “It’s my turn to rock the club” type ish makes them seriously suspect. Was Wayne doing this with the “Hot Boys”? Was Kanye cutting on “The College Drop Out”? Seems like when they’re on the come-up and trying to make THEIR OWN money they won’t risk sounding wack on the ones and twos. But once they’ve made it to a certain status, they can sh*t on the artform on some novelty ish.

Spinderella is as booty as they come to me. But on this topic, she’s dead on.

Spinderella cant dj (original spinderella di the work) & shes also a failed rapper. *she did a horrible song with big daddy kane that FLOPPED*

No one booked her on New Years Eve because nobody cares. if Wayne & Kanye didnt DJ, she wouldve still been at home trying to make friends on twitter.

I’m sure these artist’s are not *becoming* DJ’s (or TJ’s). They all merely DJ’d parties recently. I don’t think it’s a major career move for either of them…
